Chicago Women's Caucus for Art

2005-2019 CWCA EXHIBITIONS

2019 Humanity Rising II exhibition at ARC Gallery in Chicago

Humanity Rising I was born in 2016 out of the unease that we, as members of the caucus, felt in the wake of our political condition. For Humanity Rising II, the artwork embodies the human condition – politically, environmentally and spiritually.

Exhibition Dates: Feb 6, 2019 through Mar 2, 2019

Naked truth logo

2018 #nakedtruth

Artworks that embody “the naked truth”.
“Naked” means without clothing, without protection, or without disguise or embellishment.
“Truth” is factual accuracy and honesty—knowledge of events that actually occurred (including transcendent or spiritual reality).
Together the words “naked truth” imply openness to exposing what is real, raw, natural—without embellishment or concealment.
The expression “naked truth” derives from an old Roman fable in which Truth and Falsehood went swimming: Falsehood then dressed in Truth’s clothes, and Truth, refusing to take another’s clothes, went naked.

Exhibition Dates: Jul 5, 2018 through Aug 11, 2018

2017 TRANSMOGRIFICATION

Painting isn’t an aesthetic operation; it’s a form of magic designed as a mediator between this strange hostile world and us, a way of seizing the power by giving form to our terrors as well as our desires. – Pablo Picasso

transmutation • avatar • conversion • transition • discord • regeneration

TRANSMOGRIFICATION is as simple as transitioning from who we are by entering a cardboard box “the transmogrifier,” as seen in the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. Or: it can be as complicated as altering ourselves, art, institutions, and beliefs into the fantastic, magical, or bizarre, as seen in the metamorphosis from a chrysalis into a butterfly, or in game arts.

2005 Diversity and Spirit

Invitational and Juried Members' Exhibition The exhibition features work by 14 Midwestern artists; seven of whom were juried, and seven who were invited by the President of CWCA.

In this geo-political environment of our culturally diversified country, what are the commonalities of the human experience that bind us together? By celebrating the spirit of our diversity and connecting through our commonalities, we are initiating this show. It is in this spirit of celebrating the individual while rejoicing in the common experience that connects us as humans that this exhibit evolved. -Cherie Reif-Naselli This exhibition shows the richness of art by women – it's diversity in terms of life experience, age, medium, subject, and cultural background. Yet the search for identity, for one's heritage, and reaching out to others are some of the bonds we share, as women, as artists, and as human beings. -CWCA President and Curator, Judith Roth

Jurors:

Cynthia Quick and Natalie Van Straaten A portion of this exhibit was juried by two women involved in the Chicago art scene: Cynthia Quick, Director of Program Development for the Department of Cultural Affairs, Chicago; and Natalie Van Straaten, publisher of Chicago Gallery News, Chicago.
